The Cottagers remain favourites to sign the Manchester United man despite Spurs entering talks with the Bulgarian’s representatives.

Tottenham have made a last-ditch attempt to hijack Fulham’s move to sign Dimitar Berbatovfrom Manchester United.

Fulham boss Martin Jol was confident of concluding the deal and the west London club remain favourites to land the former Bayer Leverkusen man after he underwent a medical on Thursday

But Spurs have made a deadline day bid to re-sign the 31-year-old, who they sold to United for £30.75 million in 2008.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been in talks with Berbatov’s representative this morning, although an obstacle to the transfer could be the bad blood between the camps over the way the striker left the club four years ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson suggested in his press conference on Friday morning that Berbatov could be heading to White Hart Lane despite the player virtually agreeing a switch to Fulham.

Berbatov, who would cost around £4m, has angered United in the final week of the transfer window after turning down potential moves to Fiorentina and Juventus – and there could now be a final twist to the saga.

“I do not know what has happened,” Ferguson said this morning.

“He has not gone yet. I do not know anything about it. There’s not been any contact from him.

“We thought he was in Italy but it turned out he isn’t. He could be anywhere. I really mean that.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he was at Tottenham. There are rumours going around. I do not think it is settled at Fulham.”
