Many today witnessed one of the top local derby’s in the world, but unfortunately an incident right at the end of the game to the gloss off the game.
After the third United goal, coming from a direct free kick courtesy of Robin Van Persie and a slight deflection off the Manchester City wall, the United players went to celebrate and as Rio Ferdinand began to lift up his shirt to kiss the badge, he was struck with a coin thrown from the City fans.
Fortunately, the coin didn’t hit Rio Ferdinand’s eye or it could have been a lot worse than it was.
This was a very unfortunate incident and really has to be eradicated from the game. Manchester City have already apologized to Rio Ferdinand and are working with the police to see if they can identify the culprit.
There surely has to be an inquest after this incident, and a zero tolerance policy has to be implemented for the protection of the players and the good of the sport.
There will be more on this story to follow…
