The Spanish tactician had been linked with most of Europe’s top clubs – and Chelsea, in particular – since leaving Barcelona at the end of last season. He has signed a three-year contract taking him to 2016.
Guardiola was heavily linked with Manchester United, but with Sir Alex Ferguson still reigning strong and having been at United now for a record 25 years, it didn’t look likely, just yet. However, in 2016 when Guardiola’s contract is up, Sir Alex will be 75 years old, could he be keeping his seat warm for Pep, especially if things don’t work out at Bayern? Who knows, but it will be interesting to see how it does work out.
Most will ask why Bayern and not the cash rich clubs like Manchester City or Chelsea. Abramovich had even gone and had a last ditch meeting with Guardiola once he heard that contracts were being discussed with the German club. However, I believe he decided to go with Bayern because of their current values, they are a deep club when it comes to talent, already have good players and will support him in his belief system and philosophy, and compete in an already very strong league, but with his ability probably turn Bayern into the Barcelona of the Bundesliga.
Chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “We are very pleased that we have succeeded in getting Pep Guardiola, who was courted by many famous clubs.
“Pep Guardiola is one of the most successful coaches in the world. We look forward to working with him from July 2013.”
Guardiola, brought 14 trophies including three La Liga titles and two Champions League wins in 4 years as Barcelona boss, replaces a man who came within a penalty shoot-out of making Bayern European champions last season.
Will Guardiola be successful at Bayern Munich?
