Every once in a while there’s a game that pops up on the calendar that gathers the attention of the world. There are always great games, local derbies and great matches, but most like Spain’s Real Madrid – Barcelona El Classico, the big Manchester United – Liverpool derby in England, or the Milan derby, happen every year, multiple times per year.
They are all big games, but they are all guaranteed to happen on annual basis. The upcoming Manchester United – Real Madrid Champions League encounter does not fall into those categories. It’s a one of a kind game. Its a game that happens once every few years.
And due to the strange confluence of the Champions League, these two massive teams, two of the most poplar and successful teams in world football will get to cross swords, and match their wits against each other. It’s a game that whole world in some form or fashion will stop to watch.
It hits home on so many levels; first it’s the last 16 of the Champions League, which undoubtably is the most popular “club” tournament on the planet, (and at some point it might even eclipse the World Cup as the best).
In Manchester United and Real Madrid you have two most winningest teams in their respective countries, and as for managers. In United’s Sir Alex Ferguson and Real’s Jose Mourinho, you have arguably two of the most successful coaches on the planet, both doing it completely differently from the other. Sir Alex, for the past 25 years, he has done it by dominating English football and transforming United into a world power, with trophies to match their fame. Mourinho has done it totally differently. He has achieved his success by picking up Championships wherever he has been, from Porto in Portugal, (Champions lge, Lge & UEFA). At Chelsea he won their first (2) premiership titles as well as dominating the English league, breaking the Arsenal United stranglehold on the Premier League. Both managers have a high degree of respect and admiration for each other will probably share a bottle of wine after the game regardless of who wins.
On the field you have the Cristiano Ronaldo factor. If it wasn’t for a certain Leo Messi, Ronaldo would undoubtedly be recognized as the best player in the planet. As it is, he’s in the argument. For Ronaldo it’s a coming home of sorts. It was at Manchester United where Ronaldo he spent his for formative years and where his formidable skill was honed and trained, and the foundation of his career was set.
At Manchester United, it was where he learned to be a professional footballer, where he learned how to train, work, and most importantly how to win.
Ronaldo spent 6 famous years at Manchester United, where he matured into a world class footballer & won multiple championships, including the Champions League. Ronaldo’s holds his time at Manchester United in high regard and has the utmost respect for the club, and it will be an emotional moment when he returns to Manchester United’s Old Trafford.
The ingredients that add to the mix that spice this game up, are immense, and at stake is a place in the next round of the Champions League and world domination.
