The EPL team of the year was voted a few days ago, but here at Football Deluxe, we have our own opinion. Read our report and tell us if you agree!
Goalkeeper; Brad Guzan.
The 28-year-old American had an outstanding season. He established himself ahead of veteran Shay Given and went on to anchor Aston Villa’s push for premiership survival with fantastic performances. With more established keepers like Chelsea’s Petr Cech and Manchester City’s Joe Hart having sub par season, Guzan jumped to the top of the heap which says a great deal about his level of consistency.
Left Back: Ashley Cole.
The Chelsea left back has quietly put in another fine season amongst all the controversy at Stamford Bridge. Cole continues to do a solid job both getting forward in attack as well as defending. Manchester United’s Patrice Evra may have scored more goals, but Cole does a more solid defense job. Leighton Baines is showing huge strides, but his lack of Champions League experience gives the other two the edge.
Right Back; Pablo Zabaleta,
The Manchester City fullback is one of the few City players who can actually say they had a good season. Amongst all the other underachieving teammates, Zabaleta has gone and established himself as the Premier league’s top right back. Votes go in for Man United’s Rafael, but he still proves to be a bit erratic.
Center Back; Rio Ferdinand,
The Manchester United center half continues to defy the odds. Every time he appears to bee written off, he fights his way back and shows himself to be a pillar of maturity, experience and stability. Age and injuries have slowed him down somewhat and Ferdinand does not play as many games as he once did, but he appeared in all the big games that mattered. An England recall was a testament to that.
Center Back, Vincent Kompany.
Although not as dominant as he was in the championship season, he was still a stalwart at the back for City. And it was during his absence when City lost there way. City will need his leadership if they are to get back in the hunt.
Center Midfield, Michael Carrick;
The Manchester United center mid put together a solid season for the Reds. He quietly went about his job with little fuss or flash and as a result doesn’t get the accolades that he deserves. Carrick was United’s most reliable player as he laid a solid bedrock for the team. He maturely set the tone with smart and consistent ball movement and seldom gave the ball away of wasted a pass.
Attacking Mid, Frank Lampard,
The Chelsea midfielder is another player that keeps defying the odds. Early in the season it looked like he was on the way out at Chelsea with talks of them not offering him a new contract due to his age. He put that all aside and went about his business, again scoring 20 plus goals in the season. A huge haul for a midfielder. His goals and his experience were massive in leading Chelsea back into the top four and the Europa League crown.
Attacking Mid; Michu,
The Spanish sensation; In the time of 50 million pound strikers and outlandish transfer fees, every once in a while a player pops up out of the woodwork and defies the odds, making themselves a hot commodity in the process. Swansea’s City’s Michu is one such player. The Spaniard, was a relative unknown before signing with Swansea, scored 18 of Swansea’s 47 Premier League goals during a stellar first season in English football.
Forward; Gareth Bale;
Over the last three season’s the Tottenham man has shown improvement in everyone. This year he has game added winning goals to his Arsenal. With the game winding down with minutes to go, Bale has stepped up to not only score the goal but to create his own shot. His game has matured and is now more than just a winger. At times it looked like he was a one man gang. Spurs will need to retain him if they are to have any chance of maintaing their push for the champions league.
Forward; Robin van Persie
When Manchester United signed van Persie from Arsenal, then Manchester City manager Robert Mancini exclaimed , “that his signing had given United the title”. His words rang true as van Persie excelled in his United roll. He led the team and league in scoring, so much so, Wayne Rooney became and after thought. He led the United line and led them to a championship.
Forward – Christian Benteke
The Aston Villa striker was a massive reason why Villa stayed up. He scored big goals while also putting in big performances. Early in the season, Villa manager Paul Lambert was criticized for selecting Benteke over the much more experienced Darren Bent. However, Lambert, was proven to be right as the Belgian offered much more than goals. Villa will need to keep Benteke if they are to continue their young player revolution. Honorable Mention Forward; Luis Suarez, Although he may be a bit of a nightmare to deal with due to the controversy that he creates, Suarez is invaluable to Liverpool. Again he was their top goalscorer, while also leading in assists even though his season was again derailed by suspension. Second in scoring with 23 goals behind United’s van Persie.
