Having walked up the beloved steps at Wembley Stadium as a winner, he then immediately dedicated the win to Sir Alex Ferguson, thanking him for the opportunity that was given to manage such a prestigious club. It took over a decade of hard work, trial, anguish and almosts until Moyes finally lifted a trophy, except it was with a team someone else built.
No criticism to Moyes though, it is hard enough trying to follow a legend, but also the immense pressure that has been place on the Scot, from the fans and of course the media, always looking for a reason to cause a stir. You have to hand it to him, he didn’t try to re-invent the wheel today. Why try to fix something that isn’t broken? Manchester United are already Champions of England. They have not shed any players, if anything they have progressed with the signing of Zaha, who started in place of Rooney.
Other than the evident absence of Wayne Rooney and the change in numbers from number 7 to number 25 for wide man Valencia, everything seemed to run like clockwork.
If you remember a certain Mr Ronaldo used to wear the number 7. Could this be a hint of something happening in the near future?
So lots of plus points for Moyes on that note. To have high calibre players of the likes of Giggs, Van Persie and Ferdinand supporting the new Manager, if anything, speaks volumes. Van Persie mentioned in his post game interview that he was happy for Moyes, and that shows the extent of the support that he is receiving from the current playing staff.
It wasn’t an overly impressive performance from the reds, beating a newly relegated side that is getting used to life in the Championship. One question I would probably like to have answered is how is Moyes actually making improvements and can he?
Manchester United is a machine and I as a supporter and critic don’t want to just see someone come in to simply maintain, but i want to see them take the club forward. A hard task considering the company before hand. But having been given a 6 year contract, which was a great gesture to Moyes, an implication that they want David for the long run and maintain their emphasis on continuity which was coined by Sir Alex Ferguson. Ultimately the results will tell the story and what needs to happen in what will be probably the most interesting Premier League season to date, is another trophy.
If Moyes does come away with the Premiership title this year, it will surely lay a foundation for another 10 years, if not, then you could say that the writing is on the wall. Regardless, he has bought himself some time, beating a team he should have, but with a very tough start to the season, facing Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City in the first 5 games, a lot of questions will be answered very soon.
I wish him all the best.
Thank you for reading and I would love to hear your feedback. How will Manchester United fair against Chelsea and Manchester City?
