Another round of games with Chelsea and Manchester United providing the first big game of the season, while Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini received a welcome to the Premiership. Both United and Chelsea came in with new managers, “The Special One”, Jose Mourinho in his return to Chelsea and David Moyes, experiencing his first home game as United Manger. The game simmered but never did quite catch a fire.
The biggest event was Wayne Rooney being selected in United’s starting line-up as he has been caught up in constant speculation of a move to Chelsea. Neither team carved out any real solid opportunities, instead both teams seemed to be content playing not to lose, rather than an actual win. The 1-1 result was fair for both teams.
Elsewhere Arsenal rebounded after last weeks home opening loss to Aston Villa, with an impressive win over fellow Londoners Fulham. The Gunners ran out 3-1 winners with a result that possibly reflects, a poor Fulham side, rather than a good Arsenal.
Tottenham maintained their good start with another 1-0 score line over a difficult Swansea side. Spanish striker Soldado scored again from the penalty spotting give Spurs the win.
Liverpool put in a solid performance, on their way to picking up a good 1-0 win over Aston Villa. It took a great goal from Daniel Sturridge in the 20th minute to break the deadlock. The win was secured for the second week running with a big performance from new keeper Simon Mignolet.
Throughout the table, draws ruled the weekend. Everton under new manager Roberto Martinez huffed and puffed but couldn’t get a result over West Brom. Newcastle and West Ham also played out a 0-0 draw, as did Southampton and Sunderland.
In the win column Stoke came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1, while newly promoted Hull City picked up a valuable1-0 win over Norwich City, while playing the majority of the game with only 10 men.
The shock result of the weekend was provided courtesy of Cardiff City as they pulled off a stunning 3-2 win over Manchester City. City went in and committed the cardinal sin of underestimating the their opponents. Welcome to the premiership Manuel Pellegrini.
