With all the talk about Arsenal and Arsene Wenger not spending money and not having brought in any top players during the summer transfer window, Wenger stunned all comers with the signing of Real Madrid star Mesuit Ozil for £42.5m. Throughout the summer Wenger has preached that he is more interested in quality over quantity with his words aimed squarely at neighbors Spurs who have brought in over seven players.
The signing stunned people in all corners, not only in the fact that Wenger splashed that cash, but shockingly, Real Madrid would sell Ozil with reactions in Spain and Germany being that of shock.
Former Arsenal player Cesc Fábregas, expressed his shock by stating that Arsenal had signed Real Madrid’s “second-best player”, while the Germany manager, Joachim Löw, took it further describing the Spanish club’s sale of Mesut Ozil as “incomprehensible”.
Arsène Wenger and Arsenal continue to celebrate their deadline-day coup, with Ozil becoming the club’s record signing and the third most expensive in Premier League history, behind Fernando Torres and Carlos Tévez.
Fábregas, the Barcelona midfielder and a former Arsenal captain, echoed the sentiments of many of Ozil’s former Real team-mates, stating that “he was really surprised by Ozil’s departure,” Fábregas said. “He seemed to me to be the second-best player at Madrid, after Cristiano [Ronaldo]. He’ll be great for Arsenal.”
Löw picked up on the sense of dismay inside the Real dressing-room and name-checked the Germany midfielder Sami Khedira and Ronaldo as being among those that were upset. “Many Real players like Khedira or Ronaldo are sad about the transfer,” Löw said. “For me, it’s incomprehensible that Real would sell one of their top scorers.”
Ironically the deal that pushed Ozil out the door and into the thankful arms of Wenger and Arsenal, was the completion of Spurs star Gareth Bale’s transfer, coupled with that of Isco, meaning that his opportunities in attacking midfield would be restricted.
Whatever the case the signing of Bale may have damaged Spurs while at the same time benefitting rivals Arsenal who with the signing of Ozil, secure the best buy of the summer.
